The UK Government created the Registered Power Zone (RPZ) scheme in 2004. This was to provide a financial incentive for demonstration projects on innovative ways to connect renewable energy to the electricity distribution grid.

Outline & objectives

Senergy Econnect approached Narec to carry out an initial review of Registered Power Zones (RPZs) on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), focusing on the rules, technical issues and solutions.

A feasibility study to find potential RPZ areas compared two potential sites in the CE Electric network region (North East England).

The study analysed the energy requirements of a large mixed use development to identify how it could be made more sustainable through on site generation.  Research was undertaken into the technical, regulatory and commercial possibilities associated with the concept of Registered Power Zones.

Outcomes

The results from the initial RPZs review were presented at a dissemination seminar and showed that generic designs, rules and techniques could be useful in any RPZ.

A system study established parameters from the use of on-site generation to reduce the electrical network requirements.

Conditions were assessed and parameters set for consideration of co-locating a wind farm and hydrogen production/storage facility to convert back to electricity and therefore reduce the electrical network assets.
